Could a church grow from a single believer to hundreds of thousands? The Geraja Pentacosta Indonesia story shows us it can. Here, in front of Geraja Pentacosta Indonesia, we trace the roots of this vibrant faith back to its humble beginnings. Geraja Pentakosta Indonesia, as it’s known today, sprang from the vision of one man: Reverend Renatus Siburian. He began his ministry in the late 1930s, facing resistance from Dutch authorities due to lacking permits. Undeterred, Reverend Siburian moved from Berastagi to Medan, witnessing conversions and establishing a congregation among the Chinese community. Further obstacles led him to Kisaran, where he continued his evangelistic efforts while teaching religion at the Huria Christian Batak church. By 1941, Reverend Siburian arrived in Balige, Tapanuli Utara, continuing his ministry despite being labeled a nationalist by the Dutch. He initially prioritized evangelism over establishing a formal organization. However, the growing number of converts, many ostracized from their communities for their newfound faith, needed a dedicated place of worship. This led to the formation of the “Gereja Pentakosta Tanah Batak Tapanuli” in 1942 during the transition from Dutch to Japanese rule. The church flourished under Reverend Siburian’s leadership, marked by signs, wonders, and a fervent evangelical spirit. It expanded throughout Tapanuli Utara and into Sumatra Timur. The church even faced temporary closures by Japanese authorities, only to reopen later. The growth continued, and in 1944, a synod led by Reverend Siburian changed the name to “Gereja Pentakosta Sumatera Utara.” Recognizing the potential for nationwide expansion, Reverend Siburian officially registered the organization in Java in 1945. His vision expanded further, leading to the name change to “Gereja Pentakosta Indonesia” in 1948. The church’s reach extended even to Nias Island in 1959, where it thrived. Reverend Siburian’s tireless dedication laid the foundation for a faith that would touch countless lives across Indonesia.
