“Ready to discover a green oasis in the heart of Erfurt?” I ask. The Geraaue, a sprawling park, offers respite and recreation for all ages.

The Geraaue marks a significant section of the Nördliche Geraaue. This is a string of interconnected parks in Erfurt. The Geraaue itself stretches between the Straße der Nationen and the Gewerbepark Zittauer Straße. It is the largest section of the green spaces along the Gera. It covers about 22 hectares.

Before 2021, this area was just another park. The Bundesgartenschau, the Federal Horticultural Show, transformed the Geraaue. The area was redesigned to offer a wide range of recreational activities. These cater to everyone.

The northern part of the Geraaue had a baseball field and a gymnasium already. These were made more attractive. They were integrated better into the park’s design. The southern area saw more dramatic changes. The Auenteich, a pond, was created. A water-treading basin was added for weary feet. Many new playgrounds popped up for children.

Today, the Geraaue stands as one of Erfurt’s most beloved recreational areas. You can sit and relax. You may also walk your dog, but keep it on a leash. Best of all, access to the Geraaue is free and open to the public.

But there is another interesting fact about Geraaue. It is closely linked to the river that shares its name. The Gera River flows through Erfurt. Yet, it often goes by different names. Near the Dreibrunnenbad weir, the Gera becomes the Flutgraben and Walkstrom. After flowing through Luisenpark, the Bergstrom branches off.

The Bergstrom and Walkstrom meet again in Erfurt’s Old Town. From there to Venedig, the river is called Breitstrom. Then, the Gera splits into Schmale Gera and Wilde Gera. These streams leave Erfurt to the north. The Wilde Gera rejoins the Flutgraben. It then reverts to being called the Gera. So, next time you cross a bridge, remember the river’s changing identity.

The Nördliche Geraaue spans approximately 4.5 kilometers. It extends from Erfurt’s city center to Gispersleben along the Gera River. The park complex offers relaxation and recreation.

The Nordpark marks the southern start of the park. Besides the Nordbad, there is space for sunbathing and strolling. A modern skate park is new. A multi-functional playing field has been added. Playgrounds accommodate various age groups. The expanded, accessible path leads to “Klärchchen.” This park section by the former sewage treatment plant has volleyball courts. Public grilling areas are available. A large terraced area reaches to the Gera’s bank.

The Geraaue section is the largest. It features the Auenteich, offering wonderful views from the new bridge. The northern area includes the redesigned baseball field. The Geraaue sports field has been adapted. The park band concludes with the park by the former Heizkraftwerk and the Kilianipark. The inclusive playground is worth visiting. The outdoor fitness area also stands out.

So, as you explore the Geraaue, consider its transformation. Think about the river’s journey through Erfurt. It is a place where nature and recreation blend. It offers something for everyone.
