Established in 1935 as Armstrong Junior College the Georgia Southern University Armstrong Campus has a rich history. It began in the historic Armstrong House adjacent to Forsyth Park. The college later expanded. It moved to its current 268-acre location in 1966. This suburban setting near the Savannah Mall offers easy access to downtown Savannah.
The Georgia Southern University Armstrong Campus is more than just a school. It’s a beautiful arboretum. Subtropical ferns and flowers thrive here. Southern magnolias and oak trees draped with Spanish moss create a tranquil atmosphere. A wide variety of native plants adds to the campus’s charm. It truly is a green space.
The campus boasts impressive facilities. Lane Library houses over 200000 books and 18000 audiovisual works. A recent $5 million renovation expanded its capacity. The Science Center complex. Two buildings connected by a glass walkway. It is home to numerous science and technology programs. Biology Chemistry Physics Computer Science Physical Science and Psychology are all taught here. The 126056 square-foot facility opened in 2001. It was the largest expansion of teaching space since the campus opened.
A state-of-the-art Student Union opened in 2010. This $24 million green building incorporates sustainable materials. It features a high-efficiency cooling system. A 300-seat food court a 200-seat movie theater and expansive lounges make it a popular student hub. The Memorial College Center is right next door. Commonly known as the MCC it houses student affairs and activities offices.
The Georgia Southern University Armstrong Campus once had a vibrant athletics program. Known as the Pirates they competed in NCAA Division II athletics. The program concluded in 2017 after the consolidation with Georgia Southern University. Athletic facilities remain on campus. The Student Recreation and Aquatic Center and Alumni Arena are still here. Their future is uncertain. Discussions of renovations have occurred. These would allow for the university’s tennis and soccer teams to use these facilities. New recreational fields are also part of the plan. This would be a large project costing at least $40 million.
Over 1400 students live on campus. Three residential communities offer a variety of housing options. Windward Commons a suite-style residence hall opened in 2010. It houses almost 600 students. Compass Point and University Crossings offer apartment-style housing for upperclassmen and graduate students. The Georgia Southern University Armstrong Campus provides a vibrant and engaging environment for learning and living. Its beautiful setting and modern facilities contribute to its unique appeal.
