Established in 1733 by General James Oglethorpe, Savannah is a grid of charming squares and moss-draped streets. It’s a city where history lingers on every corner, a captivating blend of old-world elegance and Southern hospitality. It became known as one of the first planned cities in America. Savannah’s layout, with its squares strategically placed throughout, wasn’t just for aesthetics. They were intended as social spaces, places for the community to gather and connect. Sadly, not all of Savannah’s past is as charming as its squares. The city played a significant role in the antebellum South, and its history is deeply intertwined with the complexities of slavery. Today, Savannah works to acknowledge this difficult past while celebrating its architectural legacy and the resilience of its people.
