A red-brick Victorian marvel stands before you. This is George’s Street Arcade.
Imagine 1881. Dublin’s first purpose-built Victorian shopping centre opened its doors. It was called South City Markets then. Wealthy families promoted it heavily. The Lord Mayor himself Sir George Moyers presided over the grand opening. A lavish luncheon followed. However no native Dubliners were invited. This caused quite a stir among the locals. It wasn’t forgotten.
Sadly disaster struck in August 1892. A devastating fire destroyed the entire structure. Shopkeepers lost their shops and homes above the market. Stallholders suffered even more. They lacked insurance. Luckily a relief fund alleviated some of their losses. The public showed great sympathy.
The Arcade was rebuilt. This time using local architects and craftsmen. William Henry Byrne redesigned the interior. On September 13 1894 it reopened. Local dignitaries attended. George’s Street Arcade has thrived ever since.
The Layden Family Group acquired the property in 1992. They’ve maintained the Victorian charm. Today you see a vibrant mix of old and new.
