Did the walls of Georgenpalais ever whisper secrets of royal intrigue? We stand before the Georgenpalais, once known as the Wallmodenpalais. It began its life between 1780 and 1782. Lieutenant-general Johann Ludwig von Wallmoden-Gimborn commissioned its construction. It was nestled within his own Wallmodengarten. Imagine the garden parties, the clinking glasses, the hushed conversations within these walls. The Georgenpalais witnessed it all. In 1817, the property took on a new role. George III, also King of Hanover, acquired the estate to expand the royal gardens. The palace was renamed Georgenpalais in his honor. It became a part of the sprawling Herrenhausen Gardens. Architect Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves added his touch in 1826, designing two wings for the palace. The gardens transformed from formal to English landscape style between 1828 and 1843. A once-formal garden now embraced a more natural aesthetic. Fast forward to 1921, the Georgenpalais changed hands once more, becoming the property of the city of Hanover. The ravages of World War II left their mark. Bombing raids severely damaged the palace. Post-war, the Wilhelm Busch Society took ownership. They painstakingly rebuilt the eastern wing. Today, the Georgenpalais houses the Wilhelm Busch – Deutsches Museum für Karikatur und Zeichenkunst. It’s a place where satire and art intertwine, where laughter echoes through the halls. Two sandstone sphinxes guard the back of the Georgenpalais, silent witnesses to its long and varied history. They have seen the palace transform from a private estate to a royal residence, and finally, to a museum. What stories would they tell if they could speak?
