The city’s expansion began here in the 1640s near Fort St George. This area grew from a small settlement around a fortified warehouse belonging to the English East India Company.

It served the needs of the people and the rulers’ administrative comforts. The construction of a major port transformed Madras into an important naval base.

George Town expanded rapidly. By the early 18th century its population and commercial activity boomed. Weavers settled in Chintadripet and Collepetta. Washermen moved west forming Washermanpet. Potters created Kosapet. A bridge built in 1710 connected Egmore drawing more people to the Moore Market area.

The area boasts a rich tapestry of religious sites. The first Hindu temples in British Madras were built here. Many were constructed by wealthy merchants often acting as intermediaries between British merchants and local businesses. Several streets are named after these influential figures.
