George Robert White lived almost his entire life in Boston. He amassed a considerable fortune in the pharmaceuticals business. After his death in 1922, he bequeathed over $5 million to the city. This endowment, named The George Robert White Fund, was to finance “works of public beauty and utility.” White requested that $50,000 be used to create a memorial in his name.
The city commissioned well-known sculptor Daniel Chester French to design the memorial. Completed and dedicated in 1924, the George Robert White Memorial soon became a cherished landmark. French titled the statue “Casting Bread Upon the Waters.” It depicts a smiling angel scattering seeds. This symbolizes how White’s money gave to many causes which then took root. In 2017, workers added a new accessible pathway, benches, stair railings, and landscape plantings.
