Why is this walkway so special? This is George D. Hart Way. It is more than just a path. It represents a gateway.

George D. Hart Way marks an entryway to Boston University. It connects the Castle to the School of Law. University Trustee George D. Hart and Mrs. Hart dedicated it in 1976.

In 2013, major construction projects transformed the area around the BU Beach. The BU Beach is also known as Warren Alpert Mall. These projects included the School of Law and the new Admissions Reception Center. Trucks, cranes, trailers, and fences flanked the area.

Gary Nicksa assured everyone that the BU Beach is precious. He promised to make it available as much as possible. The School of Law project caused disruptions until mid-August. Two trailers on site slightly reduced seating on the lawn.

The expansion of the School of Law’s tower was made possible by a generous gift. Sumner Redstone donated $18 million. The project included a new west wing and upgrades to the existing building. These upgrades included thermally insulated windows and refurbished concrete panels. New mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems were also added. The west wing houses classrooms, study space, and a library.

The installation of a groundwater recharge system was disruptive. A section of the area was roped off. The recharge system collects and treats water. It then puts it back into the ground and sewer system.

The building at 233 Bay State Road became the new Admissions Reception Center. The project included a complete exterior face-lift. A large reception area and a 150-seat auditorium were created. An additional 2,500 square feet improved circulation. The building connects to The Castle.

Part of the Admissions Reception Center project included a redesign of George D. Hart Way. A new landscaped pedestrian plaza was added. This plaza functions as a meeting place for group tours. Students and families gather here before campus tours.

The existing boulevard with a center median was replaced. A wider sidewalk was built along the Admissions Reception Center. This accommodates tour groups. A vehicle turnaround and new entrance were added. This leads to the College of Arts and Sciences parking lot.

Crews installed a sewer separation project. New storm drain lines were added in the CAS parking lot and the BU Beach. This separates storm drains from sewer lines. It reduces wastewater treatment volume. It also promotes cleanliness of the Charles River basin.

George D. Hart Way is not just a walkway. It is a testament to progress, planning, and dedication to the university. It serves as a welcoming entrance and a functional space for the Boston University community.
