Founded in 1906 the Georg-Friedrich-Händel-Gymnasium stands proudly in Berlin’s Friedrichshain district. Its history is a fascinating journey through changing times. Initially located in Kreuzberg the school moved to Friedrichshain in 1924. This relocation saw the integration of a lyceum creating Berlin-Friedrichshain’s first higher school for girls. The building itself a magnificent structure designed by a team led by renowned architect Ludwig Hoffmann dates back to 1907-1908. It originally housed a Gemeindedoppelschule a dual-purpose school.

The school’s name honors the composer George Frideric Handel a significant choice reflecting its emphasis on music. Even during wartime hardships the school persevered. Bomb damage interrupted classes but instruction resumed after the war’s end. The school’s musical legacy endured. In 1968 two schools merged to form the EOS Georg Friedrich Händel a specialized school focused on music.

After German reunification the school’s name changed briefly. But its commitment to music remained. Its many ensembles and orchestras continue to flourish. A 100 year celebration featured performances of Carmina Burana and Dettinger Te Deum. This remarkable school boasts a concert hall capable of accommodating 350 people. It is a testament to the school’s dedication to musical education and performance. The school provides a modern environment for its students. Science labs were added in 2010-2011. A new sports hall ensures students have top notch facilities.

The Georg-Friedrich-Händel-Gymnasium is more than just a school. It’s a vibrant center for musical excellence a beacon of history and education. Its students participate in ensembles. They are committed to musical excellence. The school accepts students from fifth grade and also welcomes students from other grades if there is space available.
