A group of residents, led by Mr. and Mrs. Lester Hardin Hagler, decided to change that. They started holding Sunday School classes in their home on DeMontluzin Street. The classes were a hit, and soon the idea of forming a proper church began to take root. In January 1923, Gentilly Baptist Church was officially organized. They purchased property on Franklin Avenue and with their own hands started building a modest space for worship.
