Envision a place where biology is not confined to textbooks. This is GenSpace, the world’s first community biology lab. Since 2009 GenSpace has opened its doors to people of all backgrounds. Here you can learn, create, and grow with the life sciences.

GenSpace is located in Brooklyn New York. It stems from the hacking, biohacking, and DIYbio movements. Since its opening, GenSpace has focused on citizen science and public access to biotechnology.

In 2010, GenSpace opened the first community biology lab. In December of that year it opened a Biosafety Level One laboratory. GenSpace supports projects, events, courses, and art. It also provides general community resources. These resources concern biology, biotechnology, and synthetic biology. You can explore genetic engineering, citizen science, open source software, and open source hardware here.

But what exactly does GenSpace do? It offers a range of programs. These programs demystify scientific processes. They provide a platform for innovation. They also cultivate the next generation of life sciences leaders. These leaders will work in biotechnology, neuroscience, and epidemiology. Also genomics, and many more emerging global technologies.

Genspace instructors come from top institutions in the New York City area. They teach advanced biology. They make it easy to understand and hands-on. You can learn techniques that facilitated the biotechnology revolution. Get hands on experience, and find out where the future is going with DNA.

Consider joining Genspace for a hands-on foray into the world of bioplastics. You can make your own and experiment with recipes, additives and molds. Or explore how humans can collaborate with nature through synthetic biology. Make your own bioart using microbes as paint.

At GenSpace, anyone can work in the biolab on their own project. Members receive twenty-four seven access to the facility. They also get equipment and basic lab training from the staff.

Genspace also provides extramural learning opportunities for NYC’s students. These opportunities include internships, teacher training, and lab resources. One example is the Biorocket Research Internship. This is a six month intensive internship program. It is for underserved youth in New York City. GenSpace also works with the alumni to enhance college and career readiness.

Genspace is a non-profit organization. Its mission is to foster a safe and inclusive community. All people can learn experientially. They can boldly create and meaningfully grow with the life sciences. No science background is needed to take classes or participate in events. All are welcome.

A collaboration between GenSpace and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory earned a second place win. It was from the American Society for Microbiology’s 2015 AgarArt competition.

From creating art with slime mold to learning the basics of bioinformatics. GenSpace offers something for everyone. It empowers individuals to explore the life sciences. It encourages innovation and creativity. GenSpace is more than just a lab. It’s a community hub for anyone curious about the world around us.
