Were the Genoese Batteries truly Genoese? That’s the question that hangs in the air here at the southern tip of Gibraltar. The Genoese Batteries, a formidable pair of artillery batteries, stand as silent witnesses to centuries of conflict. Despite their name, the British added to these emplacements in the 18th century. They were originally constructed by either the Moors or the Spanish. The Upper and Lower Genoese Batteries, along with Flat Bastion, South Bastion, Prince Ferdinand’s Battery, and Healy’s Mortar, formed a crucial defensive line. They protected Gibraltar’s south front from potential invaders. The Upper Genoese Battery, once known as the Reduto de San Agustin, held a commanding position. The Lower Genoese Battery, formerly called the Reduto de San Philipe, offered additional firepower. Together, these batteries represent a fascinating blend of military architecture and historical intrigue. They remind us of the strategic importance of Gibraltar throughout the ages.
