Was this what awaited the nearly 20,000 souls imprisoned within the Genocide Memorial? This place, once a school known as Tuol Svay Prey High School, became a living nightmare under the Khmer Rouge regime. The classrooms where children once learned and laughed were transformed into torture chambers. The Genocide Memorial stands as a chilling reminder of the atrocities committed during the Cambodian genocide. From 1975 to 1979, the Khmer Rouge, led by the ruthless Pol Pot, unleashed a reign of terror upon Cambodia. Their goal was to create an agrarian utopia. They emptied cities, abolished money, and forced millions into labor camps. Anyone deemed an enemy of the revolution, intellectuals, artists, minorities, was targeted. The Genocide Memorial, formerly known as Security Prison 21 or S-21, became a central hub in this network of horror. Prisoners, often taken from their homes without warning, endured unimaginable torture. The Khmer Rouge meticulously documented their crimes. They photographed each prisoner upon arrival, their faces etched with fear and uncertainty. These haunting images now line the walls of the memorial. They serve as a testament to the brutality inflicted and a poignant reminder of the lives lost. The methods employed were as cruel as they were numerous. Beatings, electrocution, waterboarding, and the extraction of fingernails were just a few of the horrors inflicted upon prisoners. The goal was to extract false confessions. The confessions often implicated family and friends, leading to their arrest and ultimately, their demise. Many prisoners were transported from the Genocide Memorial to the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek, where they were murdered and dumped into mass graves.
