Ever wondered how a battery got its name from a shrub? Here at Genista Battery, the story unfolds. Genista Battery isn’t named for some impressive military feat. It’s named after Captain Frederick Brome, the former governor of the military prison located right here on Windmill Hill. In the 1860s, Brome and his prisoners excavated a cave in this area. The cave became known as Genista Cave. The name, you see, is a clever play on words. “Genisteae” is the Latin name for the broom shrub, which grows around here. It’s a nod to Brome’s name and a testament to his discovery. But Genista Battery’s story doesn’t end there. In 1906, this site bristled with three 6-inch guns. By World War II, two remained, their aim focused on defending Gibraltar. These guns weren’t firing blindly. They were directed from a hidden underground “Gun Operation Room.” This room connected to Lathbury Barracks and the northern end of the Rock through a network of tunnels.
