Originally known as the Documentation Library of the Government of Cochinchina, it was established by Admiral-Governor Marie Gustave Hector Ohier. In 1882, this very building transitioned into a public library, marking a significant milestone as Vietnam’s first public library. The General Sciences Library has witnessed the ebb and flow of history, adapting and evolving to meet the changing needs of its patrons. In 1975, the library even implemented a motorbike service to deliver books to remote areas. This innovative approach demonstrates the library’s commitment to providing access to knowledge for everyone. In 1978, it officially became the General Sciences Library of Ho Chi Minh City. The library continues to embrace innovation. The General Sciences Library launched Vietnam’s first mobile internet library in 2007. A digitization project was initiated in 2013 to preserve its vast collection for future generations. Today, the General Sciences Library houses over two million volumes. It offers a range of services, from traditional lending and reference help to modern amenities like free Wi-Fi and study group areas equipped with LCD monitors. The General Sciences Library even has a dedicated children’s area, nurturing a love of reading from a young age.
