Was General Paz always a man of war? Born in Córdoba in 1791, José María Paz, the namesake of this very neighborhood, General Paz, was a man of complex contradictions. He was a scholar who found himself leading armies. He was a unifier in a time of fracturing allegiances. General Paz embodied the turbulent spirit of Argentina’s fight for independence and the subsequent struggles to define its identity. He was a brilliant military strategist, a fact evident in his leadership during the Argentine War of Independence and the Argentine Civil Wars. He honed his tactical genius in the fiery crucible of battles like Vilcapugio, Ayohuma, and Puesto del Marquéz. In these battles, he earned the nickname “El Manco Paz” (One-arm Paz) after suffering a crippling wound to his arm in the battle of Venta y Media. Despite this setback, General Paz rose to prominence as a staunch Unitarian, clashing with the Federalist caudillos who sought regional autonomy. His victories against figures like Juan Bautista Bustos and the legendary Facundo Quiroga in battles like La Tablada and Oncativo cemented his image as a cunning leader. His ability to forge unity amongst the fractured Unitarian League demonstrated his political acumen alongside his military prowess. Yet, fate has a way of humbling even the most formidable figures. General Paz was captured in a surprise encounter with Federalist forces, becoming a captive of Estanislao López. He spent years imprisoned, first in Santa Fe and then in Luján under the watchful eye of Juan Manuel de Rosas. Even in confinement, General Paz’s spirit remained unbent. It was during this time that he began penning his memoirs, reflecting on a life intertwined with the destiny of a nation. Upon his release, he continued to be a pivotal figure in the fight against Rosas, eventually playing a crucial role in the resistance against Hilario Lagos’ siege of Buenos Aires. He ended his days as the Minister of War and Navy of Buenos Aires, a testament to his enduring commitment to the cause of a unified Argentina.
