“What kind of impact can education have on a nation?” a student once asked me, standing right here in front of the General Inspectorate for National Buddhist Education of the Kingdom of Cambodia. I smiled, for this unassuming building plays a crucial role in shaping Cambodia’s future. The General Inspectorate for National Buddhist Education of the Kingdom of Cambodia, known locally as GINBEC, might not be as visually grand as some of Phnom Penh’s temples. But it holds a silent power. It’s the heart of Buddhist education in Cambodia. This institution oversees the education of monks and nuns across the country. Established in the spirit of revitalizing Buddhist teachings after the tumultuous Khmer Rouge era, GINBEC works tirelessly. It develops curriculum, trains teachers, and ensures the quality of Buddhist education. But its influence extends beyond the monasteries. GINBEC’s work helps preserve and promote Cambodian culture and values. It plays a crucial part in the moral and ethical development of the nation’s youth.
