Now, picture this: it’s 2003. A seven-ton section of concrete falls from one of the counterweights into the water. This incident prompted immediate action. Engineers assessed the damage. They designed emergency and permanent repairs to the General Edwards Bridge.
The engineering firm SGH investigated all four counterweights. They found deteriorated outer concrete. Temporary repairs were made. Steel rope and fabric mesh were wrapped around each counterweight. This ensured the bridge remained operable during the repairs.
Permanent repairs were then developed. Engineers used the sound heavyweight concrete in the central cores. They replaced the deteriorated outer concrete on the sides and bottoms. New rack-type structures were added to the trusses. These held permanent steel ballast plates. They even included empty pockets for coated lead weight-adjustment blocks.
Currently, MassDOT is planning the General Edwards Drawbridge replacement. Several options were considered. These included rehabilitating the existing bridge and replacing the superstructure. The possibility of constructing a new bridge slightly downriver was also explored.
Ultimately, building a new bridge seemed the best option. It would be less disruptive to traffic on Route 1A. Plus, it would provide a more durable, longer-lasting structure.
A navigation evaluation is underway. It will determine the necessary channel clearances for vessels passing under the bridge. The study will decide if a fixed-span bridge can be built.
