Why did the Gemeindezentrum St. Johannes in Regensburg need not one, but two incarnations? The story begins in 1950. A generous Regensburger named Paul Fetzer bequeathed a simple house on Augsburger Straße to the Evangelical Church. This seemingly ordinary act sparked an extraordinary transformation. In 1952, the house was reborn as a church, complete with a kindergarten and living quarters for the sexton. This was the first Gemeindezentrum St. Johannes, a beacon of faith in post-war Regensburg. It served the growing community, spun off from the Dreieinigkeitskirche, becoming the only remaining emergency church of that era. The Gemeindezentrum St. Johannes pulsed with life, a testament to resilience and hope. But time, as it always does, marched on. By the 1990s, the original building, having served its purpose admirably, began to show its age. It was deemed structurally unsound. The community, led by Pfarrer Karl Friedolin Förster and the church council, faced a choice: repair or rebuild. They chose to dream bigger. In 1993, on the very spot where the humble house-turned-church once stood, a new Gemeindezentrum St. Johannes arose. Designed by architect Theodor Hugues from Munich, the new center was more than just a church. It was a community hub, embracing a kindergarten, a hall, and various functional rooms, all sheltered beneath six verdant barrel roofs. The new Gemeindezentrum St. Johannes stands as a symbol of continuity and evolution, a place where the past informs the present, and the future is embraced.
