It is a part of the large district town of Traunstein. The village is situated roughly three kilometers west-northwest of Traunstein’s center.

In the Middle Ages, Wolkersdorf was the seat of a main division. This division was part of the Oberchiemgau office of the Duchy of Bavaria. It included the villages of Wolkersdorf, Kotzing and Höpperding. Until 1803, the Domkapitel Salzburg owned the basic rights.
