Relocated 1,850 feet. That’s how far the Gem Theatre moved to avoid demolition. The Gem Theatre stands here a testament to Detroit’s history and perseverance. This isn’t just a building. It’s a story etched in brick and mortar.

Let’s step back in time. The Gem Theatre’s story begins with the Twentieth Century Club in 1903. This women’s social club built the Century Club on Columbia Street. In 1927, they sought rental income and added a movie theater next door. They called it the Little Theatre. Architect George D. Mason designed it. He ensured it matched the Century Club’s style. Red brick and sandstone trim created a seamless look.

Over the years, the theater changed names and purposes. It was the Rivoli, Drury Lane, Europa and Cinema. For a time, it screened foreign films. Then, in the 1960s George C Scott ran a live theater troupe called the Vanguard Playhouse. Briefly it was an adult movie house.

In 1985, the National Register of Historic Places listed the Gem and Century together. But progress threatened their existence. Comerica Park, the new Detroit Tigers stadium, needed the space.

Charles “Chuck” Forbes stepped in to save the theaters. He decided to move them. This was no small feat. The buildings weighed 2,750 tons. The move required 72 dollies each with a 50-ton jack. The cost was $5.5 million.

In 1997, the Gem Theatre and its neighbor embarked on their five-block journey. It took months of preparation. International Chimney of Buffalo handled the move. The History Channel’s Mega Movers documented the incredible undertaking. The Guinness Book of World Records recognized it as the furthest building relocation ever.

The architectural integrity was preserved so well, the National Register of Historic Places approved the move.

Today, the Gem Theatre is a wedding and event venue. Its Spanish Revival architecture creates a unique atmosphere. The shared lobby features wood beams and Pewabic Pottery. The theater seats 456 people. Shields, rosettes, cupids, and fleur-de-lis adorn the space.

The Gem Theatre offers various spaces. The Century Club is perfect for cocktail receptions. The Century Theatre suits ceremonies. The Century Dining Room accommodates large groups. The landscaped patio provides an intimate setting from May to October.
