Amidst the vibrant cityscape of Mannheim, find the “Gegen das Vergessen” Mural. It’s a powerful testament to memory and resilience. This mural isn’t just paint on a wall. It’s a portal to a poignant chapter of history, a tribute to the strength of the human spirit. “Gegen das Vergessen,” or “Lest We Forget,” is a collaborative masterpiece born from the vision of two remarkable Mannheim projects. The internationally acclaimed artist AKUT, also known as Falk Lehmann, lent his skill to the Stadt.Wand.Kunst street art museum. He partnered with photographer and filmmaker Luigi Toscano, creator of the “Gegen das Vergessen” photo installation. Toscano’s powerful portraits of Holocaust survivors form the heart of this mural. AKUT selected two of these portraits for the mural. They depict Bella Shirin and Horst Sommerfeld, their faces etched with the weight of their experiences. Across their images, powerful quotes speak volumes. Bella’s words remind us, “We must remember the past, but we must not live in it.” Horst’s stark confession, “I have always lived in fear,” echoes the enduring trauma of the Holocaust. AKUT’s artistic style, renowned for its photorealism, breathes life into these portraits. He chose a vibrant, almost neon backdrop, a stark contrast to the monochrome images of the past. This deliberate choice challenges the conventional representations of history. It underscores the importance of remembering and learning from the past, not letting it fade into black and white. At the bottom of the mural, a crowd of figures gathers, rendered in muted gray tones. Among them, a single figure stands out. With a raised fist, Luigi Toscano himself is depicted, a tribute to his dedication to preserving these vital stories. The Gegen das Vergessen Mural stands in Mannheim’s F6 square. It’s located on the side of a 14-meter-high apartment building. Interestingly, this very building also houses another piece of art. On its reverse side, you’ll find “My Super Hero Power Is Forgiveness,” a mural created by AKUT and Hera in 2013. This earlier work marked the beginning of the Stadt.Wand.Kunst project. The “Gegen das Vergessen” Mural serves as a beacon. It draws attention to the ongoing need to combat racism and intolerance. It’s a conversation starter. It invites us to reflect on the past. It reminds us to build a future free from the horrors of prejudice and persecution.
