Right here, in Berlin-Hellersdorf, Ingo Binsch, a 36-year-old man with a heart condition, was brutally beaten and strangled by three neo-Nazis. The Gedenktafel für Ingo Binsch stands as a stark reminder of this hate-fueled crime. The plaque, originally made of wood, was erected by the initiative “Nobody is Forgotten” on November 2nd, 2021, just shy of the 20th anniversary of Binsch’s death. It was placed near the tram stop in Hellersdorf, close to where the attack occurred. The Gedenktafel für Ingo Binsch has a poignant inscription. It reads: “In memory of Ingo Binsch, who was beaten here in the neighborhood on November 5th, 2001, by three neo-Nazis and died as a result. #Nobody is forgotten.” This inscription serves as a powerful call for remembrance and a plea against hate. Sadly, the initial wooden plaque was destroyed shortly after its installation. It was replaced, only to be destroyed again. The persistent vandalism speaks volumes about the continuing struggle against extremism. On the 21st anniversary of Binsch’s death, a third Gedenktafel für Ingo Binsch was installed. This time, it was crafted from durable stainless steel, a testament to the community’s commitment to preserving Binsch’s memory. The Gedenktafel für Ingo Binsch is more than just a plaque. It is a symbol of resilience, a reminder of the devastating consequences of hate, and a call for continued vigilance against extremism. It ensures that Ingo Binsch, and the injustice he suffered, will not be forgotten.
