“A chilling reminder stands before us. This is the Gedenktafel for the former concentration camp Limmer. A stark bronze plaque it marks the site of immense suffering.

This memorial commemorates the women who endured unimaginable horrors within these walls. The site is a poignant testament to the atrocities committed during the Nazi regime. It wasn’t just a camp. It was a place of forced labor. A place of despair.

Imagine the arrival in June 1944. Two hundred and fifty women arrived. They were transported from Ravensbrück concentration camp. Many came from France and Russia. Their faces etched with fear. Their bodies bearing the marks of previous abuse.

More women arrived. Two hundred and fifty more came in December 1944. These women were from a camp near Salzgitter-Watenstedt. Their numbers swelled again in January 1945. Nearly 500 Polish women arrived. Their former camp in Langenhagen had been destroyed by Allied bombing raids. The camp designed for 500 was now overflowing with over 1000 women. Overcrowding and disease must have been rampant.

These women worked tirelessly. They toiled in the Continental AG factory. They produced gas masks. Twelve-hour shifts. Two shifts a day. Exhaustion and starvation were constant companions. Some women were forced to clear rubble in Linden. Others continued ammunition production at the Brinker ironworks in Langenhagen.

The guards were brutal. In March 1945 around five SS men and nineteen female overseers watched over the women. Only Lina Hillebrecht’s name is known from that time. For about two weeks before the camp was evacuated SS-Hauptsturmführer Otto Thümmel took over the camp leadership.

The liberation was brief for many. On April 6 1945 the camp was evacuated. Around 930 women were deemed fit to walk. They began a death march north. Eighty of the weakest women were left behind. They were liberated by American soldiers on April 10 1945. The other women reached Bergen-Belsen on April 8 1945. There they were liberated by British troops on April 15 1945. More than 100 women died in Bergen-Belsen. They perished from exhaustion or disease.

The Gedenktafel for the former concentration camp Limmer is a vital reminder. It honors the victims. It forces us to confront a dark chapter in history. Let us never forget the suffering endured at this place. Let us ensure that such horrors are never repeated. We remember the women. Their resilience. Their strength. Their stories deserve to be told and heard. This Gedenktafel is a step towards ensuring their memories live on.”
