A cold wind whispers secrets through the Brandenburg Gate. We stand before the Gedenktafel Elfriede Scholz plaque. This unassuming memorial tells a powerful story. A story of courage defiance and ultimately tragedy.

This plaque commemorates Elfriede Scholz a master tailor. She lived in this very building between 1924 and 1929. Elfriede was the younger sister of Erich Maria Remarque the world-renowned author. Their family history is steeped in the turmoil of the early 20th century. Their shared experiences shaped their lives in profound ways.

Elfriede was a staunch opponent of the Nazi regime. Her outspoken views were dangerous in those times. A casual remark to a customer about the war being lost proved fatal. Someone reported Elfriede. The Gestapo arrested her.

In August 1943 in Dresden the authorities charged Elfriede. They accused her of undermining the war effort. The Volksgerichtshof under the infamous Roland Freisler sentenced her to death. Freisler infamously declared “Your brother escaped us but you will not”. He referenced her brother’s pacifism directly in his judgment.

On December 16 1943 Elfriede Scholz was beheaded in Plötzensee Prison. Her body was then sent to the anatomist Hermann Stieve. He used it for his research on menstruation. This horrifying detail adds to the already chilling story. The remains were only buried much later.

Erich Maria Remarque only learned of his sister’s death years later. This profoundly impacted his work. His novel The Spark of Life is dedicated to her memory. He sought justice but his efforts were ultimately unsuccessful until 1998. A law finally overturned the unjust Nazi verdict against his sister.

The Gedenktafel Elfriede Scholz plaque is more than just a marker. It’s a testament to a life cut short. It serves as a reminder of the brutal consequences of speaking truth to power. It calls upon us to remember Elfriede Scholz and the countless others lost to the Nazi regime. Let us not forget their sacrifices.
