Ten thousand to twelve thousand five hundred people. That’s how many passed through the gates of Speziallager Nr 3. We stand before the Gedenkstein Speziallager Nr 3 a somber reminder of that history. This memorial in Berlin commemorates a dark chapter. A chapter of the Soviet occupation after World War II. The Speziallager Nr 3 wasn’t a Nazi concentration camp. It was a Soviet special camp. It operated from May 1945 to October 1946.

The NKVD the Soviet Ministry of Internal Affairs established it. They chose a site already burdened with history. The grounds housed a canteen for the Nazi People’s Welfare Organisation. Two forced labor camps also stood nearby. This wasn’t a random choice. The NKVD needed space to hold the thousands they arrested.

The prisoners weren’t just Nazis. They were a diverse group. Former Nazi party members were among them. So were police and secret service members. Administrative officials also suffered imprisonment. Even suspected spies saboteurs and terrorists ended up here. The Soviet order 00315 of April 18 1945 justified these arrests. Even adolescents as young as twelve were incarcerated. Some were accused of involvement in the Werwolf organization a Nazi resistance group. Many arrests stemmed from denunciations. Adding to the injustice many were held for years without trial.

Conditions within the Gedenkstein Speziallager Nr 3 were brutal. Overcrowding was extreme. Hygiene was appalling. Food rations were meager. Medical care was inadequate. Estimates suggest around three thousand to three thousand five hundred people died within its walls. They were buried anonymously in mass graves.

The Gedenkstein Speziallager Nr 3 wasn’t alone. The NKVD sought other locations for prisons. In August 1945 they seized the Fleischmaschinenfabrik Richard Heikes. They converted the factory into a prison. Heike himself along with his housekeeper and a friend were killed. His son was arrested interned and later deported to the Soviet Union. This factory a simple brick building became known as the ‘Industriekombinat’. It housed prisoners until March 1951 first under the NKVD then under the Soviet Ministry of State Security. The East German Ministry of State Security later ran it as a central detention facility.

The Gedenkstein Speziallager Nr 3 serves as a powerful reminder. It’s a reminder of the suffering endured by thousands during and after World War II. It’s also a warning against the abuse of power. The memorial stands as a silent testament. A testament to the victims of this forgotten chapter in Berlin’s history. Remember their stories. Remember this place. Remember the Gedenkstein Speziallager Nr 3.
