This plaque, nestled along the Ilmenau River, commemorates a man who dedicated his retirement to beautifying Lüneburg’s landscapes. The Gedenkstein Hermann Busse Plaque stands as a tribute to Royal Head Forester Hermann Busse. He arrived in Lüneburg in 1881 after retiring at the young age of 53. Instead of embracing a quiet retirement, Busse founded an association dedicated to enhancing Lüneburg’s natural beauty. He recognized the potential of the Bockelsberg area, which, back then, was a desolate sandy expanse with only a few struggling pines. Busse envisioned a park and recreational area, and his passion ignited the support of influential figures in Lüneburg. Together, they transformed the sandy wasteland into a flourishing landscape. They created fish ponds, built a charming fisherman’s hut and the iconic Teufelsbrücke (Devil’s Bridge), and initiated extensive tree planting. Busse, affectionately known as “the old man of Bockelsberg,” poured 14 years of his life into this project. Sadly, it’s believed that a cold spring morning’s harsh east wind led to his demise in 1901. The Gedenkstein Hermann Busse Plaque, erected in 1903, originally featured a bronze relief. This was stolen in the 1920s. A replacement bronze plaque was installed in 1928, on what would have been Busse’s 100th birthday. The plaque simply reads, “In memory of Head Forester Hermann Busse.” It serves as a lasting reminder of his tireless efforts in transforming a once-bleak landscape into the cherished natural space we enjoy today.
