Here we stand before the Gedenkstein f\u00fcr Mehmet Kubaşık Stone. This unassuming granite stone holds a powerful story a story of loss injustice and resilience.

This memorial commemorates Mehmet Kubaşık a German citizen of Turkish origin and Kurdish descent. He was tragically murdered on April 4 2006. The perpetrators were members of the National Socialist Underground NSU a neo-Nazi terrorist group. Mehmet was the eighth victim of their horrific killing spree.

Mehmet’s life before the tragedy was full of hard work and determination. He arrived in Dortmund in 1991 after fleeing his homeland seeking asylum with his wife and daughter. He worked hard initially as a laborer before opening a kiosk in Dortmund’s Nordstadt. He ran the kiosk for two years with his family’s help. He even decided to close the business shortly before his death. He wanted to spend more time with his loved ones.

The murder itself was swift and brutal. Mehmet was found shot dead behind the counter of his kiosk. There were no witnesses to the attack. The NSU used the same pistol in all their murders. Only one spent cartridge was found at the scene.

Following Mehmet’s death his family was wrongly suspected. Investigators initially focused on his family. They were questioned extensively about supposed criminal activities. The false suspicions unfairly stigmatized the Kubaşık family for years. It wasn’t until the NSU’s self-exposure in November 2011 that the truth emerged.

The Gedenkstein f\u00fcr Mehmet Kubaşık Stone wasn’t erected until September 2012. It serves as a stark reminder of the NSU’s crimes. It also highlights the importance of fighting against racism and right-wing extremism. This is a place of remembrance a place where we honor Mehmet’s memory and reaffirm our commitment to justice. The struggle for justice continues. Mehmet’s family played a crucial role in the NSU trial. They fought for the truth. They continue to advocate for a society free from hatred. This stone stands as a testament to their strength and courage. It serves as a constant reminder that we must never forget the victims of the NSU’s terror. We must learn from the past. We must fight against all forms of prejudice and intolerance. Let us remember Mehmet Kubaşık and strive for a better future.
