Krieger’s story began far from here. He served in the artillery and the Royal Mounted Field Jäger Corps. He transitioned to forestry. Krieger first worked in Poppeln in 1868. Then, in 1872, he was assigned to Coepenick.
Imagine the landscape then. Vast forests were vital for resources and recreation. Krieger understood this deeply. He became Oberförster. This translates to Upper Forester. He managed the forests of Coepenick from 1872 until his death in 1892.
Krieger dedicated himself to preserving the area’s oak population. Specifically, he championed the Eichgestell in Wuhlheide. Eichgestell means “oak frame” or “oak structure”. It was an area dedicated to the preservation of oak trees. The Gedenkstein Albert Krieger stands here. It marks his commitment to this cause.
Sadly, Albert Krieger’s life was cut short. But his friends and hunting partners wanted to ensure he would not be forgotten. So, shortly after his death in 1892, they erected this memorial stone.
The Teltower Kreisblatt, a local newspaper, reported the dedication. The ceremony was held in the presence of Krieger’s family. Oekonomierat Neuhauss and royal forest master Westermener attended. They presented the memorial to the community.
Look closely at the stone. You can see the inscription dedicated to Albert Krieger. It reads: “DEM KÖNIGL. FORSTMEISTER ALBERT KRIEGER OBERFÖRSTER IN COEPENICK VON 1872 – BIS 1892 GEWIDMET VON SEINEN FREUNDEN UND JAGDGENOSSEN 1892.” This translates to: “To the Royal Forest Master Albert Krieger, Upper Forester in Coepenick from 1872 to 1892, dedicated by his friends and hunting companions, 1892.”
