“Why ‘City Wound’?” someone asks. The Gedenkstätte “Stadtwunde” confronts us with a difficult past. It is a memorial. It marks a painful chapter in Essen’s history.
The Gedenkstätte “Stadtwunde” commemorates a former subcamp. This camp was part of the Buchenwald concentration camp. It existed in the heart of Essen. The Außenstelle or external installation once covered 35000 square meters. It was located in Schwarze Poth street. This street no longer exists.
Imagine around 150 people forced into this space. This was in 1944. Their labor was brutal. They cleared rubble in Essen’s devastated city center. They defused unexploded bombs. The Gedenkstätte “Stadtwunde” reminds us of their suffering.
Architect Werner Ruhnau and artist Astrid Bartels created this place of remembrance. It was erected in 2002. It is in the stairwell of the Porschekanzel. This is below the Rathausgalerie in Essen’s city center.
The location is not without its problems. The Gedenkstätte “Stadtwunde” is sometimes defiled. The city administration cleans the area regularly. Construction in the immediate vicinity can restrict access. The city tries to ensure access remains possible even during construction. Control measures are in place.
Another memorial exists in Essen. It commemorates the deportation of Essen Jews. Around 1200 Jews were deported. Nine transports occurred between October 27, 1941 and September 9, 1943. This memorial stands as a testament to their fate.
These memorials remind us of the importance of remembrance. They urge us to confront the past. The Gedenkstätte “Stadtwunde” serves as a stark reminder. It is a reminder of the horrors of the Nazi regime. It honors those who suffered and perished. It encourages vigilance against intolerance. It promotes justice. It inspires hope for a better future. Let’s carry these lessons forward. Let us commit to building a world free from hatred and oppression.
Let us remember the words “Stadtwunde”. It signifies a city’s wound. It is a wound that must never be forgotten. The Gedenkstätte “Stadtwunde” ensures that we remember.
