The original house was sadly destroyed in a bombing raid in 1943. A new building stands in its place. But the memory of Schmidt persists, etched in metal and celebrated annually. Every January 18th, members of the Arno Schmidt Literary Society gather at the Geburtshaus Arno Schmidt Plaque. They raise a glass, courtesy of the Hamm district archives, to honor the writer’s life and work. A curious fact: the plaque states Schmidt died in Bargfeld. He actually passed away in a Celle hospital. Despite this minor error, the Geburtshaus Arno Schmidt Plaque serves as a poignant reminder of Schmidt’s Hamburg beginnings. His journey from Rumpffsweg 27 to literary acclaim is a testament to his unique genius.
