Is it merely bronze that stands before us or a gateway to understanding? Right here at the Gebrüder Humboldt Memorial we honor two of Prussia’s most influential polymaths.

The Gebrüder Humboldt Memorial commemorates Alexander von Humboldt and Wilhelm von Humboldt. This monument stands as a testament to their intellectual prowess. It celebrates their lasting impact on science, culture, and education.

Created in 1997 by sculptor Detlef Kraft the Gebrüder Humboldt Memorial captures the essence of these remarkable brothers. Alexander is depicted holding a Spiegelsextant with a butterfly perched on it. This symbolizes his work as a naturalist. Wilhelm holds a book with the inscription “Verweile in der Menschlichkeit. Gründe dich auf Gerechtigkeit”. This reflects his contribution to the humanities and his work as a philosopher.

The Gebrüder Humboldt Memorial highlights their shared Tegel upbringing. They were interred in the family vault at Tegel Palace. This period shaped their lives. It fostered a deep appreciation for nature.

Alexander von Humboldt a renowned scientist made immense contributions to the fields of geography, botany and meteorology. His extensive explorations of the Americas led to groundbreaking discoveries. He championed a holistic view of nature. Alexander emphasized the interconnectedness of all living things. He is often called the father of ecology.

Wilhelm von Humboldt was a leading philosopher and educational reformer. He advocated for humanistic education. Wilhelm founded the Humboldt University of Berlin. This institution became a model for modern research universities.

The Gebrüder Humboldt Memorial features bronze inscription tablets at its base. These tablets briefly describe the lives and works of the Humboldt brothers.

Originally located near the Tegel harbor the Gebrüder Humboldt Memorial was later moved to its current location in front of the Humboldt Library. In March 2019 for the 250th anniversary of Alexander von Humboldt’s birth the monument was restored and completed with a replica of the Spiegelsextant.

Consider the Gebrüder Humboldt Memorial not just as a sculpture but as an invitation to explore the world with curiosity. Emulate their intellectual rigor. May we all strive to unite knowledge for the betterment of humanity like the Humboldt brothers did.
