The Glaspalast, a striking beacon of industrial ingenuity in Augsburg, stands before you. Its vast glass facade, a hallmark of its name, once housed the bustling machinery of a textile factory. Today, it stands as a testament to the city’s industrial past, now reimagined as an art center for contemporary creations.

This remarkable building, the Gebaude H2, originally served as a crucial part of the Mechanische Baumwollspinnerei und Weberei Augsburg (SWA) – a powerhouse of the city’s industrial revolution. It was commissioned by the company in 1910. The architect, Philipp Jakob Manz – a pioneer of functionalist architecture – designed a building that was as practical as it was beautiful. The five-story structure, with its 13 window compartments along the sides, made the most of natural light. It was a masterclass in industrial design, offering a spacious and well-lit work environment.

The building was known as “Werk IV” or “Aumschle” and remained in operation until 1989. Over the years, the building transitioned to new owners. It was then that the story took a turn towards creativity. The Glaspalast found new life in 2006, transforming into the H2 – Zentrum fur Gegenwartskunst, the city’s hub for contemporary art. In the heart of Augsburg’s former textile district, the Gebaude H2 continues to be a symbol of innovation, showcasing cutting-edge art and reasserting its place as a vibrant cultural center.
