Did you know that this very spot where the Gaukushon Madrasah stands was once a slaughterhouse? It might seem strange that a place of learning and reverence now occupies what was once a place of animal butchery. But that is how history often unfolds layer upon layer.

The Gaukushon Madrasah is an architectural monument from the 16th century. It stands proudly in Bukhara Uzbekistan. The madrasah is part of the Khoja Gaukushan Ensemble. This ensemble is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Khojabor Khojas built the Gaukushon Madrasah. Construction occurred between 1562 and 1565. Abdulla Khan II a Shaybani ruler funded the project. He used the wealth of Khoja Saad. Khoja Saad was a sheikh of Dzhoybor. He was also known as “Khoja Kalon”. This nickname is reflected in the complex’s name.

“Govkushon” means “killing bulls”. This name comes from the slaughterhouse that existed here before the 16th century. Later the Khoja Mosque was built near the madrasah. It became Bukhara’s second Juma Mosque. A pool and a low minaret were added. These features imitated the Kalyan Minaret. Caravanserais were also built nearby.

The Gaukushon Madrasah has an asymmetrical shape because of the uneven ground. This makes it different from other madrasas. The two-story main facade has side wings. These wings differ in size and shape.

On the right side is a rectangular hall. It served as a mosque and a classroom. The left wing has multi-domed roofs and enclosed houses. One-story rooms surround the courtyard.

A small tower rises 19.5 meters on the building’s left side. A beautiful porch is on the opposite side of the main building. The madrasah has been renovated several times especially during the Soviet era. The state protects this monument.

Inside you will find a traditional layout. There are classrooms halls and a mosque. The courtyard features one-story rooms. The Gaukushon Madrasah was renovated in 1997. This was for Bukhara’s 2500th-anniversary celebration. Today it serves as a tourist center with workshops and exhibition space.

The Gaukushon Madrasah showcases the architectural style of the Shaybanid dynasty. The builders used three-layer walls decorative arches and bright majolica. The ensemble creates a miniature city next to a busy shopping area.

The architects of Bukhara focused on the interior. The courtyard connects all the buildings with green spaces. This “interior” was completed in the 19th century. Another madrasah and European buildings were added. These included a branch of the Russian State Bank.

The Gaukushon Madrasah stands as a testament to Bukhara’s rich history. It blends religious learning with commercial activity. It is a place where the echoes of the past meet the present. Take a moment to appreciate the layers of history within these walls. Consider the bulls that once roamed here and the scholars who have studied here. The Gaukushon Madrasah is a unique jewel in Bukhara’s crown.
