Mannheim. It is no ordinary city. Mannheim proudly carries the nickname “Square City”. This comes from its unique grid layout. Mannheim sits at the confluence of the Rhine and Neckar rivers. This location has shaped its history. The city’s streets follow a grid pattern. This is unusual for German cities.
Mannheim is known as the “city of inventions”. The automobile and bicycle were invented here. The tractor was also invented here. Gate F may hold its own innovation story. Mannheim has a rich history. It was founded in 1606. Frederick IV, Elector Palatine, started construction. He built the Friedrichsburg fortress. He also built the adjacent city center. Mannheim was granted city status in 1607.
The city faced destruction during the Thirty Years’ War. It was mostly leveled around 1622. Johan Tilly’s forces were responsible. Mannheim was rebuilt. But it was severely damaged again in 1689. The French Army caused this during the Nine Years’ War.
After another rebuilding phase, Mannheim became the capital. This occurred in 1720. Karl III Philip, Elector Palatine, moved the capital from Heidelberg. He began construction of Mannheim Palace. The Jesuit Church was also built at this time. Both were completed in 1760.
Mannheim became part of the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1802. This removed it from the Palatinate. The climate crisis of 1816-17 brought famine. Many horses died in Mannheim. Karl Drais invented the first bicycle that year.
Mannheim’s Rhine Harbour was established in 1828. The first Baden railway opened in 1840. It ran from Mannheim to Heidelberg. The March Revolution of 1848 saw political activity here.
Friedrich Engelhorn founded BASF in Mannheim in 1865. The factory was built in Ludwigshafen. Mannheim residents feared air pollution. Karl Benz patented the first motor car in 1886.
During World War I, Mannheim’s industries were key to Germany’s war effort. In 1915, Ludwigshafen was bombed from the air. This killed twelve people. French troops occupied the left bank of the Rhine after the war.
In 1923, Benz & Cie developed the world’s first compact diesel car. This happened in Mannheim. Air raids during World War II destroyed Mannheim’s city center. Thousands of civilians died.
After the war, the city rebuilt industriously. Mannheim Palace and the water tower were restored. New residential areas were developed. Mannheim has evolved into a modern city.
