Tucked away in the Chemnitz-Kleinolbersdorf valley, Gaststätte Sternmühle has witnessed centuries of history unfold. It’s not just a restaurant. It’s a time capsule. Originally mentioned in 1541 as “Brettmühle,” Gaststätte Sternmühle wasn’t always a place for hearty meals and good cheer. It began as a sawmill where the forest’s giants were transformed into planks. Alongside the sawmill, a mill and bakery operated, eventually adding a tavern to the mix. Look for the stone witness at the entrance. It displays a miller’s coat of arms with two lions, a cogwheel, and the tools of a sawmill worker—a compass and square. The initials “A” and “B” with “1849” mark the year the Bergt family took ownership. August Bergt secured a liquor license in 1844, and the Gaststätte Sternmühle began serving beer, creating a lively gathering spot around its large Stammtisch. The old half-timbered building, already centuries old by then, underwent renovations under Bergt’s ownership, attracting more and more visitors. In 1928, the guest room expanded, replacing the old baking oven to accommodate a larger Stammtisch and Büfett. The growing popularity of the Gaststätte Sternmühle led to the sawmill’s closure in 1934. A new building addition in 1937 offered stunning views of the Sternmühle valley. A decree in 1940 silenced the mill. Two remaining millstones stand as silent witnesses to a bygone era. Imagine the immense effort it took to transport these heavy stones from France by horse-drawn carriage. Since 1984, the fifth generation of the family has carried the torch, preserving the legacy of Gaststätte Sternmühle in the romantic Sternmühle valley.
