Pause for a moment here at Gasselstiege. This street holds a history more profound than meets the eye. Today, we reflect on a poignant memorial to lives lost during the final days of World War II.

This is the German War Graves Gasselstiege. It serves as a somber reminder of a conflict that engulfed the world. The war graves mark the resting place of ten German soldiers. They perished near here on Easter Monday, April 2, 1945.

Their exact circumstances remain unknown. Local residents created a war grave for them. It was placed at the foot of a cross at the Holtmann family farm entrance, known as Große Jüddefeld.

These soldiers were tasked with halting the Allied forces’ advance. British and American troops approached Münster from the south and west. The inevitability of German defeat was already clear. Münster was occupied by the Allies just hours after their deaths.

At least two soldiers died by the Germania brewery on Grevener Straße. Others fell in defensive positions between Nienberge and the city center. In these final battles for Münster, at least 50 people died.

The soldiers came from various cities including Dortmund and Cologne. Some were married with children. Leonhard Bezold was a forester from Nuremberg. Heinz Happe was a school pupil from Paderborn. Heinrich Wilhelm Kottmann lived locally on Gasselstiege. Three of the ten soldiers were 18 or younger.

The sandstone crosses stand as silent witnesses. Names and dates etched into them tell fragments of lives cut short. Georg Arnold. Leonard Bezold. Christian Brings. Heinz Happe. Kurt Hielscher. Heinz Kottmann. Matthias Lindemann. Matthias Müller. Karl Schneider. Georg Wachtel.

In April 1945, this site was installed. The Holtmann family of Große Jüddefeld farm maintained the graves until 1960. Then, Münster City Council took over.

Today, war graves commemorate civilian air raid victims and forced laborers. These individuals were transported to Münster and died here. Germany’s War Graves Act ensures the preservation of these graves.

The act commemorates the victims of war and tyranny. It keeps alive the memory of war’s terrible consequences for future generations. It makes no distinction between perpetrators and victims.

Consider the weight of those times. Imagine the fear and uncertainty these young soldiers must have felt. They were fighting in a war already lost. They were defending a city soon to fall.

As you stand here at Gasselstiege, remember the human cost of conflict. Reflect on the importance of peace and understanding. Let this site serve as a reminder of our shared humanity.
