Gaslamp Quarter

In 1867, a visionary named Alonzo Horton saw potential in a stretch of San Diego waterfront. He purchased a large area and began to develop what he called “New Town,” the area now known as the Gaslamp Quarter. Horton’s vision laid the foundation for this vibrant district. The Gaslamp Quarter evolved over time. Initially, it was a hub for respectable merchants. However, a red-light district called the Stingaree soon emerged. This area, named after the stingrays in San Diego Bay, became known for its gambling halls, bars, and brothels. This colorful era added a layer of intrigue to the Gaslamp Quarter’s history. By the 1880s, San Diego was experiencing a boom, attracting various characters, including Wyatt Earp. Earp, already famous for his law enforcement exploits, arrived in 1885 and operated gambling halls, organized gambling excursions to Mexico, and even dabbled in prospecting. The Gaslamp Quarter wasn’t just a place for humans. It also had its canine celebrities: Bum and Greyfriars Bobby. Bum, a stray dog, became a local icon, leading parades and greeting everyone. Greyfriars Bobby, a Skye terrier from Edinburgh, Scotland, became a symbol of loyalty after staying by his deceased owner’s grave for 14 years. Statues of both dogs are in a park behind the Gaslamp Museum. The Gaslamp Quarter also boasts a few ghost stories. The Davis-Horton House is considered one of the most haunted places in the area. The Haunted Hotel is another spooky spot. For those interested in paranormal activities, the Gaslamp Quarter has plenty of tales. The Gaslamp Quarter’s history is diverse. It housed San Diego’s first Chinatown, a community of Chinese abalone fishermen who settled in the area in the 1860s. This area is now known as the Asian Pacific Thematic Historic District. In 1980, the Gaslamp Quarter earned its place on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1990, the iconic Gaslamp Quarter Archway was installed, solidifying its identity. This six-ton archway serves as a reminder of the area’s rich history. Today, the Gaslamp Quarter retains its historical charm. Nearly 100 historical buildings stand alongside modern structures, creating a unique blend of old and new. Many of these Victorian-era buildings have been repurposed into museums, hotels, and businesses. The Gaslamp Quarter has evolved from a Wild West town and red-light district into a vibrant hub that honors its past.
