Remember the cattle auctions of old. This is Gartlage, a district of Osnabrück. Today, Gartlage is known for more than just livestock.
Gartlage sits next to the Innenstadt, Osnabrück’s city center. It is the second smallest district in Osnabrück. Only the Innenstadt is smaller. As of 2008, 3,644 people lived here. This shows a small increase from the year before. The district covers 169.2 hectares.
The Halle Gartlage is a key landmark. It was built in 1954. Originally, it served as a hall for auctioning cattle. Imagine the sounds of farmers and the lowing of cattle filling this space.
Today, the Halle Gartlage has changed. It now hosts concerts and flea markets. Various other events also take place here. Osnabrück’s biannual Jahrmärkte, or fairs, happen around the hall. This brings a festive atmosphere to Gartlage.
Halle Gartlage once had a special railway platform. This platform served special train journeys on the Osnabrück-Bremen line. Think of the excitement of passengers boarding those trains.
Gartlage once had a link to the tram network. Line 3 ran from Schinkel to Martiniplatz. It passed through Buersche Straße and Neumarkt. Another tram line was planned from the Innenstadt to Bremer Straße. It was to go via Alte Poststraße and Bohmte Straße. This line never became operational. However, tracks were set up under Bremer Brücke.
Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the Klushügel sports center. It offers both grass and hard-surfaced playing courts. There are also facilities for athletic sports.
Gartlage has transformed over the years. From cattle auctions to concerts, it is a district with much to offer. It continues to evolve while holding onto its history. A place where community thrives.
