Have you ever walked along a path that told a story? Welcome to the Garten der Triangulation. This isn’t just a garden. It’s a living monument to an ambitious project. A project that reshaped our understanding of Wurttemberg’s landscape.

In 1818 Johann Gottlieb Friedrich von Bohnenberger a mathematician and astronomer had a brilliant idea. He wanted to precisely map the entire region. His plan was audacious. He needed a baseline a perfectly straight line to start his measurements. That baseline he found in the Solitude-Allee. This 13 kilometer long avenue stretches from Ludwigsburg to Solitude Palace.

But the Solitude-Allee wasn’t just any road. It was already a remarkable achievement. Built in 1768 it was perfectly straight. A testament to the engineering skills of its time. Bohnenberger used this magnificent road as the foundation for the Wurttemberg state survey. He meticulously measured the Solitude-Allee. From this precise measurement he built a network of triangles. This network expanded across the entire region. The survey took over two decades to complete.

The Garten der Triangulation itself is a scaled-down representation of this historic work. Notice the stone pillars. Each one marks a significant point in the original triangulation network. Each stone represents the geology of its corresponding location. Amazing right? And look at the railway tracks embedded in the ground. They represent the lines of sight used for the measurements. The main triangle’s base line is marked by a bench. This cleverly incorporates the Solitude-Allee which is its base.

The garden wasn’t created for mere aesthetics. It was created in 1998 by Deutsche Bahn AG as a compensatory measure. It was their way of giving something back after constructing their container terminal nearby. The garden serves as a reminder of the painstaking work of Bohnenberger and his team. It’s a tribute to the precision and dedication that went into mapping Wurttemberg.

So take a moment to appreciate the Garten der Triangulation. It’s more than just a pretty place. It’s a fascinating blend of history science and nature. It’s a story written in stone and steel a testament to human ingenuity. A legacy for future generations. A unique and unexpectedly beautiful place in Stuttgart.
