Fluttering wings create a kaleidoscope of color all around us here at the Garten der Schmetterlinge. This garden is not just a park. It is a vibrant ecosystem. It showcases the delicate beauty of butterflies.

The Garten der Schmetterlinge is one of the attractions in the Sachsenwald. This is a famous recreation area near Hamburg. Elisabeth von Bismarck opened Germany’s oldest butterfly garden in 1985. It started with two greenhouses.

Inside, prepare to be enveloped by a tropical paradise. Over 1,000 butterflies from 40 different species live here. The air is warm and humid. The humidity is around 80 percent. The temperature hovers around 26 degrees Celsius. These conditions create a perfect habitat for tropical butterflies.

Look closely. You will see Atlasspinner butterflies. Their wings can span up to 30 centimeters. These are some of the largest butterflies in the world. They are nocturnal and have short lives. Admire the Schwalbenschwänze, Passionsfalter, Kaisermantel and Admirale.

Observe the entire life cycle of these creatures. From egg to caterpillar, from pupa to butterfly. Families gather around the display cases. They watch the butterflies emerge from their cocoons.

The Garten der Schmetterlinge cultivates an immersive experience. Colors, scents, and sounds create a feast for the senses. Hibiscus, banana plants and other tropical plants flourish.

Beyond butterflies, discover other creatures. A Yemen chameleon is hiding. Koi carp swim in the water. There are rabbits, Cameroon sheep and a gold dust day gecko.

In 1985, this was the first butterfly garden in Germany. Since then, the park has grown. It has become a diverse destination for families. The “Singing Water Garden” features bamboo pipes. Water trickles through them. It creates soothing sounds.

Outside, explore the rose garden. Fragrant plants fill the air. A flower meadow attracts native butterflies. Dragonflies flit over the pond. Children love the rabbit enclosure.

Before you leave, visit the Libellenteich. Reflect at the island of contemplation. The Garten der Schmetterlinge is a reminder of nature’s beauty.
