Tranquil isn’t it? The Gardens of St Peter-in-the-East. This peaceful spot wasn’t always so serene. Imagine a bustling 12th-century Oxford. This very ground was part of a thriving parish.

The Gardens of St Peter-in-the-East are more than just a green space. They’re the grounds of a church with a rich history. St Peter-in-the-East. A church that stood for centuries. It’s a story woven into the very stones. A story of Norman architecture and later additions.

Built around 1140 by Robert D’Oilly William the Conqueror’s constable. The church originally comprised a nave chancel and crypt. It wasn’t called St Peter-in-the-East initially. It was simply St Peter’s. Later it needed a distinction. Another St Peter’s church was built near Oxford Castle. That’s how St Peter-in-the-East got its name. To distinguish it from St Peter-le-Bailey. Its position near the city’s east gate earned it the addition.

The church grew. A north aisle was added in the 13th century. A tower in the 14th century. Even a chapel dedicated to St Catherine and St Thomas in the 16th century. The Lady Chapel stands as a testament to Edmund Rich. He later became Archbishop of Canterbury. He donated the chapel during his time as a resident of the hall. Now named St Edmund Hall in his honor.

St Peter-in-the-East served as a parish church for hundreds of years. But times changed. The congregation dwindled in the 20th century. The church closed its doors in 1965. It was deconsecrated in the 1970s. Renovated to become what we see today. The college library of St Edmund Hall.

Look closely. You can still feel the weight of history. The grandeur of the past lingers here in the Gardens of St Peter-in-the-East. The stones whisper tales of worship community and change. A reminder of a church that stood tall for centuries. A tranquil haven today. But with a vibrant past. A story of faith community and transformation.
