Remember when Moscow transformed from ramparts to gardens? That’s the story of the Garden Ring. It’s more than just a road. The Garden Ring is a 15.6 kilometer stretch connecting Moscow’s diverse parts.

Let’s step back to the 17th century. City ramparts once stood where we’re walking. These defenses were built after a Crimean Tatar raid. Fast forward to 1812. After Napoleon’s invasion and the subsequent fire, Moscow planned a new look.

By 1830, the Garden Ring emerged. Gardens lined the road. But the early 1930s brought change. Stalin’s plan prioritized cars. The gardens vanished, replaced by a six-lane highway. The Garden Ring became a car-dominated space. Underground crosswalks appeared. These sacrificed pedestrian space for traffic flow. The city’s visual connection was broken.

The Garden Ring redevelopment aimed to fix this. The goal was to create a modern street. It needed safe public spaces for pedestrians. It also required an efficient transport system for cars. The “100 Gardens of the Garden Ring” concept was born. The project restored historical greenery.

Strelka KB, an urban consulting company, spearheaded the project. They involved 19 architectural firms. Young local talent collaborated with international architects. The Garden Ring was split into segments and nodes. These nodes were existing public spaces. The street was divided into zones. These zones included public transport, cars, and pedestrian areas. The project added ceremonial gardens and green islands.

Between 2015 and 2017, 111 hectares were renovated. Thirteen new public spaces were created. Twenty new crossroads improved traffic. Eight new transport lines eased congestion. Almost three thousand trees formed an ecological shield.

The renewed Garden Ring attracted new businesses. Food, retail, and service spots replaced banks. The large-scale planting stabilized the microclimate. Road dust decreased, and oxygen increased. Special paving prevented flooding. It also lessened the heat from the asphalt.

The Garden Ring now reintegrates the city. It connects microdistricts with the center. It’s more accessible to everyone. The pedestrian space increased by 15%. Road accidents decreased significantly.

So, next time you’re on the Garden Ring, remember its evolution. It transformed from defense to gardens to highway and back to a greener space. This is a story of Moscow’s changing priorities. It highlights the city’s commitment to its people.
