Across the vast expanse of the Andes Mountains, nestled in the heart of Santander, Colombia, lies the captivating Provincia de García Rovira. Established in 1886, García Rovira has witnessed the ebb and flow of history. It stands as a testament to Colombia’s rich tapestry of cultural heritage. Did you know that García Rovira is one of the fastest-growing regions in eastern Colombia? Yet, it remains surprisingly isolated due to the unpaved road connecting Bucaramanga to Málaga, its capital. This isolation has helped preserve its unique traditions and way of life. The province thrives on agriculture, agroindustry, commerce, tourism, and services, painting a vivid picture of rural Colombian life. García Rovira encompasses thirteen municipalities, each contributing to its vibrant character. These municipalities include Capitanejo, Carcasí, Cepitá, Cerrito, Concepción, Enciso, Guaca, Macaravita, Málaga, Molagavita, San Andrés, San José de Miranda, and San Miguel. This expansive province is bordered by majestic páramos, high-altitude grasslands, in the municipalities of Cerrito, Concepción, Carcasí, San Miguel, and Macaravita. To the east, the province shares a border with the department of Boyacá, where indigenous Uwa communities inhabit the sparsely populated lands. The Río Nevado, descending from the Sierra Nevada del Cocuy, flows south to join the Río Chicamocha. This majestic river carves a canyon that forms the boundary with the Provincia de Guanentá. The western border follows the verdant valley of the Río Umpalá, touching the municipality of Piedecuesta in the Soto province. From a point known as La Ceba, the boundary extends into the subregion through Santa Bárbara, where the páramos begin. The páramos of García Rovira, shaped by elongated formations in the Eastern Cordillera, sometimes interspersed with hills and valleys, are a sight to behold. Alto de Málaga is one such area, where these páramos meet a diverse landscape. The province boasts a remarkable continuous belt of this ecosystem, forming a natural corridor from Santa Bárbara’s border with Silos in Norte de Santander to the páramos of Macaravita. The varied terrain includes flatlands, slopes, hills, and rugged areas leading up to the Andean cloud forest. This region was once a pristine páramo. However, agricultural expansion and land pressures have transformed it into a subsistence farming area, limiting its production surplus for trade with neighboring territories. García Rovira’s climate ranges from a cool 6 degrees Celsius to a warm 27 degrees Celsius, offering diverse environments of warm lands, cool highlands, páramos, mountains, and forests. The Laches and Chitareros indigenous groups, who once called this land home, had a deep connection to this region. Their legacy lives on, interwoven with the fabric of García Rovira.
