Gazing upon Gaojing Power Station, one can almost hear the echoes of its industrious past. This power station, located in Beijing’s Shijingshan District, has a fascinating history. Gaojing Power Station wasn’t always the gas-fired plant we see today. It began as a coal-fired powerhouse. Six coal-fired units, built between 1961 and 1974, powered Beijing for decades. These units, each with a capacity of 100 MW, collectively generated 600 MW. They provided electricity and heated countless homes. The coal-fired era at Gaojing ended in 2014. The plant transitioned to cleaner natural gas. Two combined cycle units now generate 350 MW each, totaling 700 MW. This transformation reflects China’s shift towards cleaner energy sources. Gaojing Power Station showcases how energy production can adapt to environmental concerns. The Datang International Power Generation Co Ltd owns and operates the station. They played a key role in this vital transition. Interestingly, the new gas-fired units also have combined heat and power (CHP) capabilities. This means they generate both electricity and heat, maximizing efficiency and minimizing waste. So, Gaojing Power Station stands as a testament to China’s evolving energy landscape. It is a symbol of progress and a reminder of the constant pursuit of sustainable practices.
