Amidst the hustle of Prabhadevi stands Shree Siddhivinayak Temple. It is more than just a religious site. It is a landmark. It is a tourist magnet in Mumbai. Have you noticed how the temple dome lights up? The colors change every few hours offering a spectacle to behold.

This temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. He is known as the remover of obstacles. People believe he grants wishes. The Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Mandir is a popular Hindu temple. It is visited by devotees from all over.

The temple’s story began in 1801. Laxman Vithu and Deubai Patil constructed it. Deubai Patil funded the construction. She hoped Ganesha would bless infertile women.

Local lore speaks of Ramakrishna Jambhekar Maharaj. He was a devotee of Akkalkot Swami Samarth. The guru ordered him to bury two idols. He buried them in front of the Siddhivinayak statue. Swami Samarth predicted a Mandar tree would grow there after 21 years. The tree grew. It had a Svayambhu Ganesha image on its branches.

Inside the Shree Siddhivinayak Temple, a small mandap houses Siddhi Vinayak’s shrine. The wooden doors feature carvings of the Ashtavinayak. These are the eight Ganesha manifestations in Maharashtra. Gold plates the inner roof of the sanctum. The central statue is of Ganesha. A Hanuman temple stands nearby.

The Shree Siddhivinayak idol is made of black stone. It stands two and a half feet high. The trunk tilts to the right. The idol has four hands. One hand holds a lotus. Another holds a small axe. A third holds holy beads. The last holds a bowl of modaks. Modaks are Ganesha’s favorite sweet. The idol has a third eye like Lord Shiva. A Mooshak the mouse sits near him. The idol is seated in Padmaasan the lotus position.

The Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Temple Trust manages the temple. The temple receives significant donations each year. It is one of Mumbai’s richest temple trusts.

Festivals bring even more life to the Shree Siddhivinayak Temple. Ganesh Chaturthi is the main festival. Hanuman Jayanti and Sankashti Chaturthi are also celebrated.
