A district north of the Han River. That’s the simple meaning behind the name Gangbuk. But Gangbuk is more than just its location. It’s a district brimming with history, culture, and natural beauty. Right here, in this vibrant district, stories of revolution, resilience, and remembrance intertwine. Gangbuk is a district carved from Dobong District in 1995. It’s a relatively young district in a city steeped in ancient history. The current mayor is Park Gyeom-su.

Gangbuk is home to Dream Forest, the fourth largest park in Seoul. It’s a place of dreams and escape, especially beautiful in spring and fall. The Northern-Seoul Art Center sits at the park’s edge, a tilted marvel housing an observatory with breathtaking views. From there, you can see the Bukhansan, Suraksan, and Dobongsan mountain ranges. Even the Han River and the N-tower are visible in the distance. Dream Forest gained further fame after appearing in the Korean drama “IRIS”.

Nestled at the foot of Samgaksan Mountain lies Hwagyesa Temple, a place of peace and reflection. Originally built in 1522 by Monk Shinwol, the temple has withstood the test of time, even after being ravaged by fire. Rebuilt in 1866 under King Gojong, Hwagyesa Temple offers a unique temple stay program. It’s a chance to immerse yourself in Buddhist traditions, from chanting and meditation to bell-tolling and rosary making.

Gangbuk also carries the weight of history within its borders. The April Revolutionary Cemetery commemorates the 224 victims of the April 19th Revolution of the 1960s. It stands as a testament to the struggle for freedom and democracy. Among the graves is that of Yu Yeongbong, a figure whose name echoes through Korean history. Beyond its historical significance, the cemetery is also known for its stunning sunsets and vibrant autumn foliage.

Nearby, the Modern History Memorial Hall celebrates South Korea’s contemporary heritage, focusing on the principles of quality, freedom, and democracy. The exhibits primarily use Korean, making a guide invaluable for non-Korean speakers.

Finally, the Yi Jun Tomb stands as a tribute to a pivotal figure in Korean history. Yi Jun, a graduate of the Korean Empire’s Judiciary Academy, served as a special ambassador to the Second Hague Peace Conference in 1907. He was sent by King Gojong to advocate for Korea’s independence against Imperial Japan. His untimely death marked a tragic end to a mission filled with hope. The tomb serves as a poignant reminder of his sacrifice and the ongoing fight for sovereignty. Gangbuk, a district north of the Han River. It is so much more than just its geographical location. It’s a living tapestry woven with threads of history, nature, and the enduring spirit of the Korean people.
