Bathe your senses in the faint scent of sulphur as we approach Gandhak Ki Baoli. This is no ordinary stepwell. It’s a testament to Delhi’s history and ingenious water conservation methods.

Gandhak Ki Baoli stands in the Mehrauli Archaeological Park. It’s one of four stepwells in the area. These stepwells were essential for the people of Delhi. They provided water during the long dry seasons.

Iltutmish of the Slave Dynasty built Gandhak Ki Baoli in the early 13th century. That makes it about 800 years old. He wanted to ensure a constant water supply for the city. The name Gandhak comes from the sulphur content in its water. People believed this water had curative properties.

Legend says Iltutmish built it quickly. He learned that the Sufi saint Hazrat Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki needed water. The saint needed it for bathing and ablutions.

Imagine this place centuries ago. People from all walks of life came here. They drew water. They rested in the cool chambers. The five-story structure descends in a taper-down fashion. This design helped withstand underground pressure. The stairway is about 40 meters long and 12 meters wide. Ornate pillared passages line each floor.

The Archaeological Survey of India, ASI, has worked to maintain Gandhak Ki Baoli. In 2004-05, they removed silt. This helped the water level rise to 12 meters.

Despite its importance, Gandhak Ki Baoli faces challenges today. Pollution and neglect affect the water quality. Urbanization and encroachment threaten its surroundings. Once, children swam here. Today, it struggles against the pressures of a growing city.

Gandhak Ki Baoli is more than just a well. It represents Delhi’s ingenuity. It showcases the city’s commitment to preserving its heritage. Let’s appreciate this historical treasure and remember its significance.
