Hidden beneath the Santa Monica sun lies Gandara Park. It’s a place of quiet heroism. A place where the echoes of a forgotten war hero finally found their voice. Gandara Park wasn’t always a sanctuary of green. Before swings and laughter, it was a clay mine. Then, a landfill filled with the debris of a growing city. In 1975, it was reborn. Transformed into Stewart Street Park, a refuge for the community. But the park’s true identity lay dormant, waiting for its hero to be recognized. Joe Gandara, a son of Santa Monica, grew up near the park’s future site. He fought bravely in World War II, making the ultimate sacrifice in Amferville, France. His valor was overlooked for decades, likely due to his Hispanic heritage. In 2014, residents suggested renaming Stewart Street Park to honor Gandara. President Obama had recently awarded Gandara the Medal of Honor posthumously, bringing his story to light. In 2016, the proposal was approved. Gandara Park now bears the name of a local hero. Today, Gandara Park offers more than just open space. It boasts a playground, a basketball court, a youth baseball field, and even a concession stand. The park also comes alive in the summer with “Jazz on the Lawn.” This event fills the air with music and the tantalizing aromas of food. Gandara Park stands as a testament to perseverance and recognition. A place where a hero’s name finally found its home.
